#4 Softball Team Falls To Coe in World Series Opener 2-1

Leigh Bonkowski tied the game in the top of the seventh with a RBI single.

Raleigh, N.C. -- The fourth-ranked softball team lost 2-1 to Coe 2-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Softball Championship Tournament at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Bombers (39-6) will face Ramapo in an elimination game on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Coe pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh after the Bombers had tied the game in the top of the inning. Senior center fielder Leigh Bonkowski (The Williams School/Mystic, Conn.) hit a two-out double to score junior catcher Hannah Shalett (Shepaug Valley/Bridgewater, Conn.), who had led off the inning with a single.

The Kohawks staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, following a pair of walks with the game-winning double.

Bonkowski finished with two of Ithaca's four hits. Junior Nicole Cade (Beaverton/Portland, Ore.) struck out six, allowing seven hits and four walks. The loss snapped her 15-game winning streak against Division III opponents.

The Bombers will face Ramapo, a 3-1 loser to Rutgers-Camden in Friday's first game, in an elimination game Saturday at 11 a.m.
